Gel Pads for Skaters

One of my favorite products for preventing foot blisters, lace bite, and other kinds of foot pain caused by skating are gel pads designed for skaters, such as Clear Clouds and Bunga Pads.

Clear Clouds
Clear Clouds

These gel pads are made of a soft, clear polyurethane gel called viscoelastic polymer, that has special "liquid-solid" properties that allow it to absorb shock and isolate vibration.

The pads come in many different shapes and sizes that are designed to protect your feet from pressure, abrasion, vibration and painful bone protrusion. The pads are not very thick (1/16 to 3/16 inch) but no matter how hard you squeeze them between your fingers, you can still feel a substantial layer of gel.

A Florida company called Skating Safe makes a line of polymer gel products called Clear Clouds that was especially designed for skaters. Their catalog includes pressure relief disks in two sizes, lace-bite pads, blister sheets, ankle wraps, and a universal pad suitable for protecting the achilles tendon and other parts of your foot.

My favorite product is their 2.75" diameter 3/16" thick pressure relief disk. I use it anytime I start to experience pain over my inside or outside ankle bone. I also occasionally use the ankle wrap, the thicker universal pad, and the even thicker lace bite pad to protect my ankles from cuff pressure when I'm planning to skate a long distance in my speed boots.

The manufacturer recommends wearing Clear Clouds under tights or nylon stockings, so they will stay in place, but I have not had a problem with them sliding around on my feet when I wear them under my socks.

Bunga Pads is another gel pad product for inline skaters, quad roller skaters, and ice figure skaters. I have not tried Bunga Pads, but I believe they are similar to Clear Clouds.
