Driver Passed Out and Killed Arizona Skater
February 7, 1996

Michael McAlpin of Tucson, Arizona died Wednesday, February 7, 1996 after he was struck by a car while inline skating near the University of Arizona campus.

The 43 year old skater was moving eastbound in the 3500 block of East Cody Avenue when he was struck by a Ford Mustang with 24 year old Thomas Slanina at the wheel. Mr. Slanina was unconscious at the time of the accident. He had just passed out while he was driving, and a passenger in his car was attempting to control the vehicle.

The automobile struck Michael McAlpin when it failed to stop at a red light. The accident occurred at 10:33 p.m. and Mr. McAlpin was pronounced dead at University Medical Center at 10:52 p.m.

The cause of the driver's incapacity is unknown.
