Africa's Ice Speedskating Members of the ISU:
The South African Ice Skating Association (AISA) was founded in 1937 and it was based at the newly built Wembley Ice Rink built in Springfield, Johannesburg. The SAISA was recognized by the International Skating Union (ISU) in 1938 as the national governing body for the sports of ice speedskating and ice figure skating in South Africa. The association's membership in the ISU was revoked in 1950, and remained revoked for more than 20 years due to the South Africa's racial segregation policies and program known as "apartheid". The South African National Olympic Committee (NOC) was expelled from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1970. In 1991, as part of the transition to multiracial equality, a new NOC was formed and admitted to the IOC, and the country competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona. At the ISU Congress in 1994, Speed Skating split from the then SAISA, and the two bodies SAFSA (South African Figure Skating Association) and SASSA (South African Speed Skating Association) were formed and each became full members of the ISU in their own right and the controlling bodies of their sport in South Africa. At the request of the then NOCSA and National Sports Council (NSC) a “loose” association was formed, i.e. South African Ice Skating Federation (SAISF), as we both have the same international controlling body. Although technically this association is still in place, each association is completely autonomous Resource
