Temporary Ice Rink
Sportoase is targeting mid-2021 for opening a newly constructed ice rink
and swimming pool complex.
The city of Antwerp is working on a temporary solution for the
ice skating clubs and the ice skating public.
Research is underway to construct a temporary
and covered ice rink on the former Olympic football field at
ark Groot Schijn by the start of the next sports season.

New Ruggeveld Ice Rink in 2021
Sportoase is building an ice skating rink
with two ice surfaces on Ruggeveld by 2021,
one 60 by 30 meter rink and a smaler
30 by 15 meter rink.
The Antwerp Alderman College has awarded the
design, construction, financing and operation
of a new ice rink in Deurne to Sportoase.
If the city council gives the green light on May 27, 2019,
there will be not one, but two ice floors at
Park Groot Schijn by mid-2021. Sportoase will
also build the new swimming center nearby.

ZJA "Sports Centre Sportoase Groot Schijn, Deurne" Project
In Deurne, on the eastern rim of the city of Antwerp, in the middle of Ruggeveld Park,
lies a special sports building. One can swim, practice springboard diving and
learn to use diving equipment, but also learn to skate, and cheer for the
local ice hockey club or watch a game of figure skating, all under the
same roof. This unique combination required a special ZJA design that
integrates these different functions in a smart and compact building
Having entered the entrance hall a choice has to be made between liquid
and frozen water. The ice rink is to the left, the swimming pool to the right.

This Dutch language article by Jan Auman that was published on the Nieuwsblad.be
Web site in October of 2010 announced that the
Ruggeveld ice rink would be closing its doors on May 30, 2011
after almost forty years in business.
From retiring rink manager Marc Croes:
"It will be with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to this
ice rink that I opened in 1972". The rink closed
because its building was getting old and in need of repairs
but also because the rink that attracted more than 800 people
in one evening in the past was struggling to
attract 200 people over an entire weekend.
