History of the Tahiti Roller Marathon

A breif history of the Tahiti Roller Marathon in French Polynesia. See also more about French Polynesia Skating, about Skating by Country, and about Skating by Continent.

1999

The first annual Tahiti Inline Marathon toook place on February 20, 1999 on the island of Moorea in French Polynesia, and approximately 200 skaters participated in the event. That first year, a huge storm struck Moorea right after the event stranding some of the skaters on the island for a few extra days.

1999

From event organizer Christopher Pierre: In March 1998, I decided to put on an inline marathon on the island of Moorea in conjunction with a running marathon there. As I did not have any promotional contacts, I found Ernie Printzen from Get Inline events to promote the race.
Our first race was in February 1999. Since then, I have been promoting the race by myself with the help of Eddy Matzger and all the skaters who have come to experience Tahiti. I was traveling back and forth between Tahiti and Los Angeles for 10 years. But I moved there with my wife, Karima (in ?) for the birth of our son Teva.

2006

2006 was the 7th edition of the Tahiti Inline Marathon, and the event name was changed to the "Tahiti Aito Inline Skate Challenge". In the past the Tahiti Marathon was held place on the island of Moorea or the island of Tahiti, but in 2006 there will be racing events on three different islands.

2005

There will not be a Tahiti inline skating marathon in 2005 because the event has been moved from the month of November to February of 2006.

2004

The 6th edition of the Tahiti inline skating was called the "Tahiti Black Pearl Marathon and it took place on November 7, 2004.

2003

In 2003 the Tahiti inline skating marathon was renamed the "Tahiti ILQ-9 Roller Marathon" and for the second year in a row it took place on the island of Tahiti. This was the first year the Tahiti inline marathon included more Tahitian skaters then visiting skaters. 2003 was the 5th year of the event and it took place on November 8, 2003.

2002

In 2002 the Tahiti inline marathon was again called the "Tahiti Nui Roller Marathon", but there were two big changes that year. The marathon was moved from the month of February to November 11, 2002, and the location was moved from the island of Moorea to the island of Tahiti. The 2002 marathon was the 4th annual event.

2001

In 2001 the 2001 Tahiti Inline Marathon was renamed the "Tahiti Nui Roller Marathon", it took place for the 3rd time on the island of Moorea, and it was the 3rd annual event. I believe the marathon took place sometime between February 17 and February 20, 2001.

2000

The 2nd annual Tahiti Inline Marathon took place February 19, 2000, again on the island of Moorea, and more then 250 skaters from France, the United States, and Tahiti participated in the event.
