The Baxter Cup
EVENT: Baxter Cup
FIRST HELD: 1884
The Baxter Cup is a curling trophy competition considered by many to be the oldest
still-contested sporting trophy event in all of New Zealand.
It was named after Dunedin Curling Club founder David Baxter,
the man who donated the trophy. Baxter arrived in New Zealand
in 1856 after immigrating from
Inaugural Baxter Cup in 1884
It was first presented in 1884 by the Dunedin Curling Club but the
event went on haitus when that club was dissolved in 1895.
2nd Baxter Cup in 1900
The second edition of the Baxter Cup held in 1900
in Central Otago.
The Baxter Cup Today
The event has been held irregularly since 1990
because it is always played on natural ice and
that can only be done when ice conditiions are
favorable and safe.
It has most recently been organized by the
Naseby Curling Council as a single-day bonspiel.
The 2017 Baxter Cup champions were
the Kyeburn Curling Club of Kyeburn who
won the final bout against the
Mount Ida Curling Cub of Ranfurly.
