Cecilie Skated 100 Kilometers at Age 10
In 1998, when she was only 10 years old, Cecilie Mogensen skated
all the way around Bornholm Island in Denmark during
that island's annual
Bornholmrundt event.
It took her 8 hours and 45 minutes to finish
the 100k (62 mile) event. In 1999, when she was 11 years old,
she skated the event again and reduced her time by 2 hours,
finishing in 6 hours and 35 minutes.
In 2000, 12 year old Cecilie had a personal goal of skating
the 100k around Bornholm in less than 5 hours. Not only did
she meet this goal, by finishing in 4 hours and 49 minutes,
but she placed 9th overall in the women's division.
More About Cecilie Mogensen
Cecilie is a happy, natural, and self-confident
young girl, who loves to skate, but also enjoys
having fun with her non-skating friends. She lives
with her parents, Helle Hansen and Jes Mogensen, on
Bornholm, a small island off the coast of Denmark,
with a population of about 45,000. Cecilie skates
with the
Bornholm Rulleskøjte Klub, a local
inline speedskating club, with nearly 100 members.
The Island of Bornholm has no indoor roller
skating rink, so during the cold winter months,
the club members train twice a week indoors on
the wooden floor of a local gymnasium.
