In March of 2001, I had an opportunity to skate in
Venice Beach and Santa Monica with Dirk May, the leader
of the Frankfurt Tuesday Night Skate in Germany. It
was a fun day, and we exchanged a lot of ideas about
night skates and organized skating tours (what
makes them work, typical problems, and why U.S. night
skates do not attract thousands of skaters like
European night skates).
We didn't do anything special that day.
We spent a couple of hours hanging out at the beach,
talking to people and enjoying the beautiful weather. We chatted with
Patrick of Venice Roller Works and Harry Perry, the "Kama Kosmic Krusader".
We also checked out the new Venice skate dance plaza,
tried on sunglasses, tried (unsuccessfully)
to steal some cookies from a movie filming crew,
skated to the Malibu end of the beach bike path,
and finished off the day by
stuffing ourselves with nachos and strawberry
margaritas at the
Baja Cantina.
I even had a chance to meet some of
Dirk's friends from Germany who happened to be in town.
Of course I had to talk Dirk into trying out my new
Trail Skates. He
had no problem at all with those things! It takes most
people about an hour to get comfortable on Trail Skates
but he started zooming around on them immediately.
And so Dirk and I came to the end of our day in Venice Beach
and Santa Monica and our first meeting in person. It was such
a pleasure to meet him at last and we had a great time together
that day!
The Next Time I Saw Dirk
...it was the following year at the
2002 Long Beach Inline Marathon.
