History of the Oscar Mathisen Trophy
|
The Oscar Mathisen Trophy is awarded every year
by an ice speed skating club in Oslo Norway
(Olso Skoiteklubb)
to the most outstanding international ice speed skater of the year,
based on results of the European Championships,
the World Championships, the Olympic Games, official ISU World Cup events,
and other world-level competitions.
The trophy was first awarded in 1959 in honor
of the legendary Norwegian ice speed skater
Oscar Mathisen
who died in 1954. For the first 8 years,
skaters could only win the
award one time, but that policy was changed in 1967.
Women were not eligible for the trophy
until 1987, and the first female winner was Bonnie Blair
of the United States in 1992.
