BRITTA VANTOURNHOUT - PART 2
In part 2 of an interview
with inline speed skating champion
Britta Vantournhout of Belgium, she talks
about her favorite events, ice speed skating,
and the skater who is her hero and role model.
|
Britta:
Since 1998 I have been Belgian Overall Champion every year.
I don't count all of my medals anymore, but I have more than 50.
I competed for Belgium at the world champions
in 1999 in Chile, 2000 in Colombia, 2001 in France,
and 2002 in Belgium.
Sponsers
Kathie:
Who have you been sponsored by?
Britta:
I was sponsored by Mogema for 2 years
and since 2002 I have been a member of
Team Bont International.
Races and Venues.
Kathie:
In how many countries have you skated?
Britta:
In all of Western Europe, and also in Hungary, Chile,
Colombia and South Africa
Kathie:
What is your favorite outdoor speed skating event?
Britta:
That is a tough question. I like the Grand
Prix of Zurich a lot. I guess I like any event where
there is a big croud, it's a beautiful sunny day, and
the surface is good.
I think the World Championships will always be my number one event.
I also like watching and racing in the European championships.
But I also appreciate the nice small races in Holland,
and of course I like the 3-day Flanders International
Grand Prix in August, which take place on my home town track
in Zandvoorde, near Ostend, Belgium.
Kathie:
What is your favorite indoor skating venue?
Britta:
I have skated indoors in Belgium. If I had
to choose, I would select the indoor track of Gent (Ghent).
Kathie:
What is your favorite outdoor skating track?
Britta:
I like to skate on the red track of Pamplona and
the track of Gujan-Mestras. Also the track of Oostende
is one of my favourites, but if I have a choice,
I prefer to skate on the road.
Personal life
Kathie:
What do you like to do for fun when you're not skating?
Britta:
I like to hang out with my friends, watch movies,
listen to music and I like to watch the soccer
games of my brother.
Kathie:
Do you have any plans for the future?
Britta:
First, I would like to keep doing a combination
of skating and studying. After university I would like
to have a physiology business of my own. Or maybe
I would like to go to sporting events as a physiologist.
Ice Speed Skating.
Kathie:
What about ice speed skating. Have you tried it?
Britta:
Of course! I live in Belgium! Sometimes in winter the
river next to the track freezes and then we can
ice skate on the river, but I also have done some more
professional ice speed skating in Holland on
a 400 meter track. I don't like ice speed skating as much
as inline speed skating, but I will probably
try it again in the future.
Heros and Role Models
Kathie:
Which skaters do you admire the most?
Britta:
When I was a little girl my big hero was the
Belgian girl Hilde Goovaerts. I guess I was
her biggest fan! She really was my hero and I
wanted to become a world champion like she was,
and well ... that is still my dream. I think this is one
of the things I enjoy the most about skating - trying to
climb to the top and trying to stay there.
