Britta at the Rome Marathon
Kathie Fry:
When I learned that you
finished in first place at the 2002 Rome Marathon
I sent email to everyone I know!
Can you tell us about that race?
Britta Vantournhout:
When I first saw the Rome Marathon circuit - before
the race started -
I thought "oh my god, this is crazy" because
a lot of the skating surface was cobblestones.
But after we finished the first lap, I started
feeling more and more comfortable. It was a difficult race
because we were on cobblestones more than half of the
time.
I was very excited about skating in this marathon, because I had never
been in Rome before. This was the last Grand Prix event of the
World Roller Cup and the race was being held
on the 13th (my lucky number).
Actually I was a bit frustrated because I had trained a whole
season for the world championships on my hometown track
and then, right before the worlds, I fell and bruised my ribs
and broke my hand. I had an operation to put pins in
my hand one week before the world championships.
the worlds.
So, instead of training, I had a relative rest-period before
the worlds, so I guess I was in my top skating condition
after the world championships.
At the Rome Marathon the pace was not very fast. I
stayed at the back of the pack or in between the
other Team Bont members because
the group was pretty small and I didn't feel comfortable
racing in the pack with a plaster cast on my arm.
During the last lap I moved forward, and in the last straight
way I still felt great, so I decided to try to get in the
front. I knew it was still too early, so I waited a bit
and then I started to sprint. In the corner of my right eye
I saw Jessica Smith coming and the only thing I thought
about was how badly I wanted to do well in that race.
When I crossed the finish line, I could not believe it!
And so many people who came to say congratulations...
it was awesome!
