A WEEK OF SKATING IN MALLORCA, SPAIN (Day 1)
by
Daniel Edman of Stockholm, Sweden
When I check in at the Arlanda Airport,
I realize I have met most of my fellow skaters before, but I have never
seen most of them in normal street clothes. They sure look very
different than they did in the skating
outfits that I normally see them wearing.
Check-in runs smoothly and a couple of hours later we
arrive on Mallorca in due time, although the landing
is quite bumpy due to windy conditions. Once out of
the terminal building we notice clear traces of a heavy
rain, and the weather does not look too promising at
this stage. The weather has been bad for a couple of
days we hear, but the forecast indicates that better weather
is on the way, so we are not too concerned.
At the Airport we also meet with
Jonas, a fellow Swede from the southern part of Sweden who we have not met
before and who flew in on a separate flight.
The transfer bus takes us across Mallorca and an hour
later we arrive in Port dŽAlcudia and the Laguna Hotel,
which is going to be our home for the week to come.
During the rather confused hotel check in we find the
sleeping Kathie Fry on one of the hotel lobby couches.
We wake her up and she is smiling and looks happy
although it is almost mid night.
We are all quite tired and head for our rooms/beds as
fast as possible, but before we split
Johan (the organizer as well as guide) sets tomorrow's departure
to 10 a.m. Me, Totte, Esko, and
Klas are lucky having Kathie
staying with us in our apartment. This makes us feel
even more international than the rest!
