A WEEK OF SKATING IN MALLORCA, SPAIN (Day 5)
by
Daniel Edman of Stockholm, Sweden
Thursday means, for most of the group, taking the bus to Palma
de Mallorca on the west coast, and skating back across
the entire island, in what proves to be a nasty head wind and
asphalt conditions that are far from good.
All this I´m totally unaware of when I and 6 others walk up
the 2nd highest mountain of Mallorca at 4000 ft altitude.
The climb is performed in T-shirts since it is almost calm up
here. At the summit we can view the sea almost all the way around
Mallorca. Only one part of the island is hidden behind the highest peak,
which is a closed military area that cannot be entered.
From the summit we carefully study the flat land between
Palma and Alcudia, but our fellow skaters are not to be
spotted anywhere down there. Maybe they are having a break?
In order to climb this mountain we rented a car and drove
up to 1600 ft altitude. The road was steep, narrow and
winding with tight hairpin curves, and we overtook a number
of bicyclists working their way up the mountain.
If anyone had told me I was going to skate on this road
the very next day, I would have immediately called a
doctor for that person, but little does a man know about his future.
Later that day I meet all the tired skaters who made it from
Palma, and when asking Johan about the plans for the next day
he answers with a question:
- How is the asphalt in the mountains?
I´m convinced Johan has gone crazy and I therefore do not reply.
